Migraine

Migraine is defined as severe, episodic, unilateral, throbbing headache accompanied by nausea, photophobia, visual or neurological manifestations.

Types

Classic

Site: unilateral starts temporal.

Chronic pain

headache can occur at any time of the day, but usually not during the period of concentration (rather when relaxing).

Throbbing.

Neurological manifestations in the form of hemianopia / paresthesias precede the characteristic headache in opposite side (4 phases)

Patient prefers to be left in a dark room.

Common

The characteristic headache without neurological manifestations. Important to differentiate from common tension headache.

Complicated

Neurological manifestations continue into or outlast the headache (rarely, could lead to infarction).

Eg. Opthalmoplegic migraine, hemiplegic migraine.
